HotS spins an engrossing tale of vengeance and the price one must pay to attain it. The StarCraft II writers still seem to struggle with believable dialogue between humans, leaning too heavily on cheesy one-liners–but the conversations amongst alien races are much more interesting, offering a look at just how the Zerg think. Whereas the Terran battalions in Wings of Liberty built up slowly and methodically, having a mass of larvae at your disposal lets you spawn an army in moments or adapt to changes in the blink of an eye. This makes missions feel much more streamlined and exciting, letting you continuously churn out units instead of waiting around for your production facilities to pump out soldiers. The other major improvement to the story missions comes in the form of Kerrigan herself, who now acts as an almighty spell-casting hero unit that imbues a sense of continuity into the overall campaign. Taking the time to complete bonus objectives will level Kerrigan up, giving you access to an ever-increasing suite of cool abilities and offering you a satisfying, permanent reward for exploring each mission. Also of note are the achievements, which actually feel like worthwhile, attainable goals to extend the campaign’s lifespan. But StarCraft would be meaningless without multiplayer, and when it comes to online play, HotS delivers. The new units create space for innovative builds and strategies without overhauling how any of the races play. For instance, Protoss get early air harassment in the Oracle, Zerg can now siege with Swarm Hosts, and Terran land attrition is even easier using the Widow Mine.

I have been mulling this around in my head, the possibility of doing some SC2 while waiting for the announcement of Dawn of War 3 and I really hope soon. Has the player base mostly ditched it for MOBA’s? And I heard tell of Blizzard making the game not very fun after their last round of patches. So has it become a graveyard? What the hell is up with Legacy of the Void? And how do the expansions work? I dunno how they arranged that.
It’s a great game for singleplayer. Multiplayer is whatever, it’s just a bunch of devotees and the dreaded actually good players Koreans now, versus AI is fun, and the arcade continues to be roughly xblig quality. It doesn’t seem like SC2 ever hit the balance stride that Brood War eventually did, but it’s still fun to watch people play and it has one of the higher skill ceilings ever basically. I’m sure it’s a better game than DoTA clone X, but that’s not saying much.

Starcraft II: Heart of the Swarm picks up where Wings of liberty left off with the first few missions dealing with Jim Raynor and the ex-Queen of Blades, newly back to human form, Sarah Kerrigan trying to escape from the planet Char. As well as the continuing story line, Heart of the Swarm brings some graphical enhancements and upgrades such as a nastier looking Zerg Creep, slicker front end game menus and new units for each race.
One nice add is that gather units automatically start harvesting when a game starts instead of having to be commanded to do so. Raynor gets a neon underlight upgrade…. It is full of very serious players that strive to constantly improve playing techniques just to shave micro seconds off production times to gain an advantage over their opponents. A Battle.

Time to start beating that campaign. Oh well, is the standard physical copy worth getting like what else is included besides disk, cd key and the instruction manual that has probably already leaked online because I can just buy the digital copy from Blizzard and save on sales tax. The same thing actually happened to me, thats why I had shipping issues. My CC had expired! Luckily they bumped it up to 1 day shipping for me.

Legacy of the Void shows why StarCraft II is the king of real-time strategy multiplayer
The expansion includes additional units and multiplayer changes from Wings of Liberty , as well as a continuing campaign focusing on the Zerg race and following Sarah Kerrigan in her effort to regain control of the swarm and exact her revenge on the Terran Dominion’s emperor, Arcturus Mengsk. During BlizzCon , Blizzard announced that StarCraft II would be re-branded as a free-to-play game, hence opening the multiplayer mode to everybody and bringing some changes to previously paid features of the game.
However, those who had already bought Wings of Liberty before the free-to-play announcement were gifted the Heart of the Swarm campaign free of charge. This new free-to-play model and changes to the availability of the campaigns was in line with Blizzard’s vision to support the game differently going forward. Heart of the Swarm features a single-player campaign with 20 missions plus seven evolution missions which allow the player to upgrade units , and continues the story from Wings of Liberty.
At the higher skill levels, the system now chooses more competitive matches over faster matchmaking. As of Heart of the Swarm, Blizzard changed the league.
For hundreds of thousands of people StarCraft 2 is an ultra hardcore competitive multiplayer game built for eSports and little else. For them playing and hopefully winning ranked matches is all that matters. But, according to Blizzard, just as many fans of the real-time strategy game suffer from what it dubs “ladder anxiety” – that is, they want to play competitively against other players online but are intimidated by the prospect and so don’t.
It is this “ladder anxiety” that the gargantuan PC developer hopes Heart of the Swarm, the first expansion for StarCraft 2, will combat. He continued: “Ladder anxiety is something that’s come from the community. They say, ‘every time I go into the game I’m so nervous about whether I’m going to go up or down in bronze or silver or gold.

Players play 5 qualifying matches and are then assigned a skill level, which determines the league and division they will be placed in. Players are placed into separate brackets for 1 vs 1 and team matches  and teams can participate in anonymous matchmaking. There is a ladder within each skill league. Players do not directly select which map they play on. Instead, they may vote against three “unpreferred maps” out of a list, and are less likely to play on said map, but are not guaranteed to do so.
Winning a match grants points which can eventually lead to a rating change.
