While VPL still offered digital copies of some of its books during the novel coronavirus pandemic, the library announced Tuesday that it’s launching a takeout option for those who want to get their hands on a hard copy. Under the new system, however, books can only be picked up at select branches and library staff pick out the selections. The takeout system allows readers to order online or call in. First, they’re asked what language and age range they want the books for.
Then they’re prompted to tell library staff what their reading interests are and whether they’re looking for fiction or non-fiction. Other Metro Vancouver libraries have launched their own takeout systems. All North Vancouver libraries, for example, are lending items through staff recommendations or specific requests. The books are individually bagged, and a time is arranged for the member to pick them up. A staff member puts the bag on a table outside the main doors and the borrower takes that bag home.
VPL says it plans to have its locations open gradually over the summer, with all locations offering limited services by September.

Eight therapy dogs will be available to borrow from the Canine Library on Saturday for minute outings as part of the Vancouver’s Poetry in Parks initiative. The six-year-old border collie nuzzled her face, then settled down for the reading, his head resting on his crossed paws. Boekhoven, who is the volunteer co-ordinator for the therapy dog program at St. Candie Tanaka of the Vancouver Public Library said the event will give people an opportunity to sit with a dog and a handler and either read from provided material or bring their own.
The Vancouver Public Library holds a poetry program in the city’s parks every year, and this time they wanted to do something different, she said. Ashten Black of the therapy dog program at St. John Ambulance B. It’s a lot more fun to read to a dog, Black said, adding canine companions are very accepting of mistakes. John Ambulance also wanted to provide a chance for people living in Vancouver, especially those who may not have a dog or are new to the city or country, to spend time with a furry friend, she said.
